Pop sensation Shakira was crowned the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year in 2011, during a star-studded tribute dinner held at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino in Las Vegas. The event saw the Colombian singer, famous for her hit song Hips Don’t Lie, sharing an intimate moment with her father. The two-hour salute to Shakira’s career included performances from Latin music’s biggest stars, such as Franco De Vita and Alejandra Guzman. Shakira was visibly moved by her father’s touching tribute where he sang Mi Nina Bonita to her. She cried and thanked him later in Spanish, saying “Gracias, Papá, por esa canción.” Shakira has sold over 60 million albums in Spanish and English and is also known for her philanthropic work through the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which raises funds to fight poverty and educate the poor.
